Day 3 - PKRA - Movistar Kitesurf Pro Tarifa 2007
The Levante continued its full fury all throughout the night up to the third
day of the Movistar Kitesurf Pro Tarifa 2007. Winds with sustained speed of
40 knots (8 bft) continued to hammer down Valdevaqueros beach which prompted
the race director to postpone the competition until the conditions settled
down in the afternoon as forecasted. Finally at around 3:30 pm, the men went
to the waters to finish the single elimination and by the time the wind
subsided to a mild roar, the day was concluded with the women’s single
elimination which finished around 5:30 pm.
Heat #13a was to be the cancelled heat from yesterday, but in a show of good
sportsmanship, Alvaro Onieva ( Spain) conceded to Ruben Lenten
( Netherlands) given the same conditions as yesterday. In the
second round of the same heat, local kiteboarder and North rider Cesar Portas was
defeated by Danish Nick Jacobson in an easy heat riding a
5-meter kite against Portas’ 7-meter kite in 40-knot winds. Jacobson
landed big air tricks and downloops with grabs while Portas struggled with
his larger kite and only managed a few smaller kite loops and jumps.
In the next heat, Mallory De La Villemarque (North, France) defeated Kevin
Langeree (Naish, Netherlands) who both went out on their 5-meter kites. Both
guys displayed an awesome show for the crowd, landing several powered passes
in the lulls and busting huge air and kiteloops in the gusts. It was a close
battle until De La Villemarque threw down a back-breaking kiteloop in the
last minute to clinch the win. He also stomped a back to blind air pass,
front side 360, slim and blind judge while Langeree landed a 313, blind
judge with aerial handle pass, back to blind air pass and mobe along with
some very high jumps but displayed less power overall in his technical moves
which cost him the game.
Meanwhile, Madison Van Heurck (Naish, USVI) was defeated by Aaron Hadlow who
executed a crowd pleaser in a show of kite mastery, unleashing an incredibly
powered and high hooked to unhooked kiteloop/backloop 360 and stomping a
blind judge, raley to blind and a massive air to triple downloop and two
huge double kiteloops. Van Heurck on the other hand struggled to stay on the
water but managed to land a blind judge and went for some really powered
moves, including a slim and mobe with a low kite angle but missing the bar
on both attempts.
After a good show yesterday, the flying Dutchman Ruben Lenten equally
displayed a stunning game today and even gave everyone a lesson on how to do
crazy loops. He came unstuck on a massive jump and destroyed his 5-meter
kite which ripped in half and drifted on to the buoy in the semi final
round. Luckily, Hadlow came to his aid and lent him his Flexifoil kite
allowing Lenten to finish the heat and claim the win. During the rest of the
heat, Hadlow sat on the rescue boat waiting for Lenten to finish before
finally getting his kite back to face De La Villemarque in the next round of
the semi final. Trucking upwind in the few minutes before his heat, Hadlow
didn’t seem too worried and opened the heat with a massive kiteloop and a
blind judge while De La Villemarque stomped a nice mobe and a few kiteloops
but Hadlow had him on height and technical difficulty. After defeating De La
Villemarque, Hadlow went on to defeat Lenten in the final round with massive
jumps, kiteloops and downloops, mobe, s-bend to blind with air pass and
blind judge. Lenten went on to bust out some more big kiteloops and a sent
front mobe to downloop and a blind judge but that proved no match for the
world champion. In the battle for third, De La Villemarque threw down some
more back-breaking kiteloops to seal the win against his opponent Jacobson
who went for his big airs to downloops and huge airs with grabs.
In the women’s division, Kari Schivebaag’s ( Norway) raleys and
small jumps proved no match to Gisela Pulido ( Spain) who landed a
few unhooked moves and a kiteloop in heat #7 while Bruna Kajiya
Brazil) defeated Ania Grzelinska (North, Poland) with superior technical
riding. A blind judge and raley to blind along with several other unhooked
moves defeated Grzelinska’s raley, rolls and small kiteloop. In the final
rounds, Kajiya proved superior against Pulido, landing a blind judge,
powered rolls and raley to blind against Pulido’s unhooked moves and a
couple of kiteloops. In the battle for third place, Grzelinska barely
defeated Schivebaag with a kiteloop in what would be known as a battle of
the rolls, with both riders landing front to blind, back to blind, raley to
blind and grabs.
